A New Prayer Book For Temple Anshe Sholom: Back to the Future Last year, the Religious and Ritual Committee, with support from Rabbi Caplan and Cantor Doob, began a search for a new prayer book. The Reform Movement was issuing a new prayer book and the old one would be going out of print. Gates of Prayer was first published in 1975, and this new book would reflect the advancement in our Movement since that time. The New Reform siddur, Mishkan T’fillah (“a dwelling place for prayer”) was one option which we “tried out” during services, asking for your feedback as to likes and dislikes. We wanted to know what you, as a congregational whole, were looking for in a prayer book. With the advent of desktop publishing many congregations had published their own siddurim and we explored them as well, seeking your input. After looking through the surveys, compiling the information, and checking the availability of “home published” books, the R & R Committee unanimously agreed, based on all these facts, that we should purchase the New Reform Prayer book Mishkan T’fillah, as well as new copies of the updated Plaut Torah and Haftarah books. The New Prayer book contains transliteration parallel to the Hebrew. The book has also been published for our students who understand Hebrew without the Transliteration. They will receive these books from our religious school with the same pagination as the books that will be in our sanctuary. This prayer book has reexamined the liturgy and has included some previously excluded passages. It also contains commentary for those who would like to better understand what they are saying/praying. If we receive our shipment on time, we will begin using the new prayer books this summer in an informal setting. In place of sermons, we will, for the most part, examine the new siddur, and become familiar with it, experientially, by praying and singing from it. Sometime, early in the fall, we will have a dedication, celebrating a new prayer book for our generation and for the generations to come. We will celebrate its advent with song and celebration. Please join us, as with this prayer book, we go “back to the future.” |

Our Capital Campaign The “Realizing the Dream” Capital Campaign for Temple Anshe Sholom continues to move forward toward successful achievement of its $1.5 million goal. Members’ awareness of the Temple’s needs is clear, and the generosity of those who have made gifts and pledges has been great. The campaign leadership has worked diligently to speak with as many members as possible about the Temple’s needs and plans and have been incredibly successful. But, of course, time constraints and other commitments do not always allow campaign volunteers to make the Temple’s effort their top priority. Recent unforeseen circumstances have led to a limited number of solicitations being made in recent weeks. As we would like to allow as many members as possible to meet in person with campaign volunteers and allow sufficient time for consideration, this phase of the campaign is going to be extended, and the Phonathon and mail elements of the campaign delayed until September. This will also allow more time for preparation for these important and labor intensive phases of the campaign. Perhaps even more than in earlier stages, volunteers will be needed to perform phone solicitations of members and to prepare mailings. These tasks will be important to ensuring that each member is contacted and that our goal is met. Members interested in volunteering should contact Claire Latman, Marty Joffe, or Bob Sugar. |

Religious School Committee
The Religious School Committee is seeking additional members who are bright, energetic and positive thinking!! Please consider joining our committee where together we can work to make our Religious School the best it can be. We are also looking for volunteers to help out with Hebrew School canteen, 4:00-4:30 p.m., on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's a great way to get to know our Hebrew School students. Parents, if your child frequents the canteen, please donate your time. This year the Purim Carnival will take place on March 16th. We would like to introduce some new games and activities to the children. If anyone has any Purim games they would like to donate, please let us know. Beth Lichtenberg and Deb Feingold, co-chairs |

Members Helping Members – Our Caring CommitteeThe newly revitalized Caring Committee is seeking new members to assist in our mission to help Temple members in need. We will be meeting soon after the High Holy Days to fully define our role and find the best ways to reach out to our membership. Our member-to member assistance will provide many different ways for committee members to serve (possibly providing rides for members who cannot drive, visiting members who are ill or bereaved or other mitzvahs yet to be defined). Therefore, the larger the committee membership we have, the larger the scope and depth of the services we can provide. Any help you are able to offer will be appreciated. Please contact co-chairs, Vicki and Marshall Meilach at (708) 481-7721, to volunteer on this committee.
